The nearest town of some size is Castelnovo ne' Monti on the Emilia side or Pavullo nel Frignano farther north, both with everyday services; Sassuolo and Modena are much farther down on the plain. This part of the Apennines is known for forests, chestnut country, pasture and small mountain villages on the road between the Modenese and Garfagnana sides of the range.
