The area sits in the upper Volturno basin with the Mainarde and Matese parts of the central-southern Apennines within the local horizon. The Volturno river system is the main watercourse of this part of Molise. The Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise begins to the west around the Mainarde, with Montedimezzo near Vastogirardi a UNESCO MaB reserve in the wider province. Campitello Matese is the nearest established ski area, about 1 hour by road. Isernia is the nearest town of size and has a substantial historic centre, the National Paleolithic Museum, and the Romanesque Fontana Fraterna. This part of Molise is known for Apennine hill country, pastoral landscapes, and archaeological finds linked to the Paleolithic site of La Pineta.
