The Riserva Naturale Pian di Spagna e Lago di Mezzola is within the same local area, covering the flat wetland zone at the lake’s southern and eastern margins. Chiavenna, the nearest substantial town, has a full service centre and a preserved historic core. Madesimo and the Valchiavenna ski lifts are the nearest major skiing, roughly three quarters of an hour to an hour by road depending on the lift base. The area is known for the lake-and-valley setting at the entrance to Valchiavenna and for access toward the Spluga route.
