The cluster is on the north shore of Lake Como at the point where the lake opens into the upper Adda valley. The Orobie and Lepontine Alps rise around the basin, with Monte Legnone immediately above the area. The Adda enters the lake here, and the Pian di Spagna e Lago di Mezzola Regional Nature Reserve begins just to the east, with reedbeds, wetland and the small Lago di Mezzola. Piona Abbey stands on the peninsula south of the town. The nearest major centre is Lecco, while Sondrio is the main town up the Valtellina; daily services are also tied to the road and rail junction at the head of the lake. Skiing is not in the immediate radius, but the Valtellina resorts are reached up the valley by car. The area is known for lake wind sports and as the meeting point of the lake and Alpine valleys.
