The town sits on low hills at the edge of the Abruzzo Apennines (Apennine foothills). The Adriatic Sea and the northern Abruzzo coast lie to the east; nearby coastal towns include Pineto and Roseto degli Abruzzi. There is no national park inside a 15 km radius; the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park and the higher Apennine massifs are further inland. No ski lifts are within 15 km; the nearest ski areas are on the Gran Sasso massif well inland. Atri is a small historic hill town with a cathedral (Duomo), a medieval centre and archaeological remains. The provincial capital Teramo and larger service centres lie inland, while the coastal towns provide beaches, seasonal tourism and rail links.
