The Tordino valley runs through this part of the province, with cultivated hills, scattered woods and small ridges between the valley floor and the first mountain slopes. The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park begins nearby on the upland side, and the main high mountain landscapes of the Gran Sasso are within the local hinterland. The nearest substantial town is Teramo, which has a cathedral, a Roman theatre and the full services of a provincial capital.
