The Gran Sasso massif rises to the west within this part of the province, with the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park starting not far from the city and the main Prati di Tivo ski lifts reached by mountain road in roughly an hour. The Adriatic coast at Giulianova is the nearest sea outlet. Teramo is the provincial capital and has the cathedral, administrative services, schools, shops and the main urban functions for the area. The wider area is known for access from the Adriatic side into the Gran Sasso and Laga mountains and for Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and olive-growing countryside in the provincial hills.
