The cluster sits on the Apennine slopes of the Monti della Laga range; the local terrain is mountain: forested ridges, beech and chestnut woods, high pastures and small mountain streams. The territory lies inside or immediately adjacent to the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The area contains small mountain villages and hamlets with only basic local services; larger service towns and provincial capitals (Teramo, L'Aquila) are tens of kilometres away. There are no big lakes or coastal features within the immediate 15 km; the Adriatic is farther to the east. Alpine-style ski lifts are on the Gran Sasso massif (Prati di Tivo / Pietracamela) at a driving distance rather than within the local valley. The area is known regionally for mountain hiking, forestry, and pastoral landscapes typical of the Abruzzo Apennines.
