The Tronto river and the Tronto valley run close to the town; the settlement overlooks the valley. Parts of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga lie in the surrounding mountains. The area is near the Marche–Abruzzo regional border. The town contains the Fortezza di Civitella del Tronto, a large 16th–19th century fortress and the site of the last Bourbon resistance in 1861. The nearest town of size is Ascoli Piceno (around 11–12 km) with a medieval centre, provincial services and a train station. Nearest organised alpine ski facilities are on the Gran Sasso (Prati di Tivo) rather than immediately adjacent. The nearest coast is the Adriatic Sea.
