The Tronto river and the Tronto valley run close to the town; the settlement overlooks the valley. Parts of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga lie in the surrounding mountains. The area is near the Marche–Abruzzo regional border. The town contains the Fortezza di Civitella del Tronto, a large 16th–19th century fortress and the site of the last Bourbon resistance in 1861.
