The Sangro river rises in this area near the border with Abruzzo. Much of the surrounding landscape falls within the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise or directly against its Molise edge. The nearest ski lifts are the small ski area of Roccaraso-Rivisondoli, roughly 35-45 minutes by road depending on the access point. The nearest town of some size is Castel di Sangro, which has the main services for the valley; Isernia is farther away and functions as the provincial centre. This part of Alto Molise is known for mountain pasture, transhumance routes and protected upland woodland and meadow landscapes.
