Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park begins close by in the mountains west and north of the basin. Nevegal, the nearest local ski area, is on the slopes above Belluno at about a 20-minute drive. Belluno is the main town of the area, with a historic centre, services, rail connections and the provincial institutions. This part of the province is known as the gateway between the Venetian plain and the Dolomite valleys.
