Lake Garda is within about 15 km at its southwestern end around Desenzano and Lonato. The Mincio river corridor is nearby to the east around the Mantova side of the Garda outlet, though not at the cluster itself. Castiglione delle Stiviere is the nearest town of size, with a substantial built-up area, services and a historic centre linked to the Gonzaga period. Solferino and San Martino della Battaglia are nearby and the area is known for the Risorgimento battlefields of 1859 and for the origins of the Red Cross. The setting is varied for the Po plain fringe but it is not one of Italy’s standout landscapes.
