This is in the Monferrato hills, with low vine and grain hills and small wooded ridges around the Po plain edge. The Po is a short distance to the north, and the Tanaro valley is also nearby in the wider Casale Monferrato–Valenza area. Casale Monferrato is the nearest town of size, with a substantial historic centre and services. The wider Monferrato wine landscape is what the area is known for, with vineyards, country villages and wine production across the surrounding hills. Parts of Monferrato are included in the UNESCO wine landscape listing, but the core scenery around Pomaro Monferrato is the ordinary lower Monferrato hill country rather than one of Italy’s standout set pieces.
