This is in the Monferrato hills, with a mixed landscape of vineyard slopes, cultivated hills and the Po plain close by. The Po runs by Casale Monferrato, and the area also includes the lower courses of the Tanaro and other rivers of the Alessandria plain. Casale Monferrato is the main town nearby and has a substantial historic centre with the cathedral, the castle and everyday services. Parts of Monferrato are included in the UNESCO wine landscape of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, and the Casale area is part of the wider Monferrato wine country known for vineyards and wine production.
