The cluster is in the built-up area of L’Aquila, so the setting is an inland provincial city in the Aterno valley under the Gran Sasso group and the Sirente-Velino range. Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park begins just east of the city, with Campo Imperatore and the higher Gran Sasso massif within the local mountain setting. The Aterno River runs through the basin. The nearest ski lifts are at Campo Felice and Campo Imperatore, both roughly 30–40 minutes by road depending on the access point and season. L’Aquila is the nearest town of size and has the regional institutions, university, major services, and a substantial historic centre under reconstruction after the 2009 earthquake. The area is known for its mountain basin setting and as the main urban centre of inland Abruzzo.
