The Aterno River runs through this part of the valley. The Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park begins nearby and covers much of the surrounding mountain country. The nearest substantial town is L'Aquila, a few kilometres south, with the regional capital's services and a large historic centre. Campo Imperatore and the Gran Sasso side roads are the main mountain destination in the area, while the valley around Pizzoli is known for livestock grazing, mountain pastures and saffron country in the wider Aquila basin.
