The cluster sits in the middle Aterno valley under the Sirente massif, with the Abruzzo Apennines enclosing the area on all sides. The Aterno River runs through the valley near Fontecchio. The Sirente-Velino Regional Park covers this area. The nearest ski lifts are at Campo Felice and Ovindoli on the Velino-Sirente side, roughly 35–50 minutes by road depending on the access point. L'Aquila is the nearest city of size, with services, rail links and a university, about half an hour away. Sulmona is also within practical reach in the Peligna basin. Fontecchio itself is known as one of the stone villages of the Valle Subequana, and the wider area is known for medieval hill villages and mountain pasture landscapes.
