This area sits on the inland Murge plateau south of Bari, with low limestone country, fields, olive groves and scattered masserie around the town. The nearest coast is the Adriatic around Bari and Mola di Bari, but it is outside the 15 km landscape radius. Within the area are the large commercial outskirts along the Bari-Taranto corridor and the settlement belt toward Valenzano and Noicattaro. Bari is the nearest city of size, with the port, airport, universities and major services. The area is known locally for agriculture on karst limestone and for Casamassima's old centre, sometimes called the "blue town" because of painted streets in part of the historic core.
