The Maiella massif rises directly above Lama dei Peligni, with the Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise National Park and the Maiella National Park both close by in this part of inland Abruzzo. The Aventino valley runs below the village, and the gorge country around Taranta Peligna and Fara San Martino is within the same mountain basin. The nearest ski area is Passolanciano-Maielletta on the Maiella, roughly an hour by road. Casoli and Lanciano are the nearest larger towns for everyday services, while Sulmona is the main historic centre inland. This area is known for high limestone mountains, wildlife habitats linked to the Maiella, and traditional pastoral upland landscapes.
