The cluster is in the built-up area of Catania on the Ionian coast, with Mount Etna rising inland and the lower volcano visible across much of the city. The Simeto plain surrounds the southern side of the city, and the coastline here is urban waterfront rather than a protected natural shore. The nearest substantial ski area is Etna, with lifts around Rifugio Sapienza and Piano Provenzana, reached by mountain road in roughly 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and snow conditions. Catania itself is the major city of eastern Sicily, with a large historic centre, port, airport, universities and extensive services. The city centre is part of the UNESCO listing of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. The area is known for Etna, Baroque architecture and the fish market.
