The Esino valley begins around Fabriano, and the Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi Regional Natural Park lies nearby, with the Frasassi cave system and limestone gorges in the area. Monte Cucco Regional Park is also close on the Umbrian side of the watershed. The nearest town of clear size is Fabriano itself, which has a substantial historic centre, civic museums and rail links; the area is known for paper-making, including the long-established Fabriano paper mills. Fabriano is on the list of UNESCO Creative Cities for Crafts and Folk Art.
