The city lies on the Ligurian Sea and has an active commercial port and passenger ferry terminal around the Porto Antico. The hinterland rises steeply into the Ligurian Apennines; local summits within a few kilometres include Monte Fasce and Monte Gazzo. Two principal torrent valleys cross the city: the Polcevera to the west and the Bisagno to the east. Public parks and seaside promenades are present in parts of the city, notably the Parchi di Nervi east of the historic centre.
