The Sentino river cuts the Frasassi gorge here, and the Frasassi cave system is inside this area. Much of the immediate landscape falls within the Parco naturale regionale della Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi. The nearest town of size is Fabriano, which has a substantial historic centre and rail links; Jesi is the larger town farther down the valley. The area is known for the Grotte di Frasassi and for quarrying and farming in the inland Marche valleys.
