The Trebbia river runs through the area, with gravel banks and a broad valley floor near Travo. Farther up the valley, within this part of the inland Piacenza area, there are wooded slopes, sandstone and ophiolite outcrops, and a sequence of small historic villages. Bobbio is the nearest town of note in the valley, with a substantial historic centre and the abbey complex of San Colombano. The area is known in Emilia for the Trebbia valley landscape and for outdoor use of the river in summer.
