The area around
Location score 85/100The cluster sits in the Crete Senesi, a named landscape of clay hills and 'biancane' badlands south‑east of Siena. Monte Oliveto Maggiore, a Benedictine abbey with cloister fresco cycles by Luca Signorelli and Sodoma, lies within the comune. Land use within about 15 km is predominantly cereal fields, olive groves, vineyards and scattered farmsteads. The Asciano–Monte Antico railway crosses the area and is used for occasional tourist 'Treno Natura' services. Asciano provides basic services (shops, bars, a railway station, municipal offices) and has a historic centre with churches. There are no named mountain ranges or ski lifts within roughly 15 km; the city of Siena and its major services and transport links lie some 25–30 km to the northwest. The Crete Senesi here is a recognised landscape feature rather than a national park or UNESCO site.
