This cluster sits in the built-up area of Reggio Emilia, so the lived setting is an urban plain in the central Po Valley. The Crostolo crosses the city and the Secchia is to the east. The nearest larger landscape feature is the northern Apennine foothill belt south of the city, but it is outside the immediate urban surroundings. Reggio Emilia itself is a provincial capital with a substantial historic centre, services, rail links and industry, and it is known for the tricolour flag museum and for Parmigiano Reggiano in the surrounding area.
