Villa

The area sits on the Tyrrhenian coast, part of the coastal stretch often called the Costa degli Etruschi. The local seafront includes long promenades and the Terrazza Mascagni. A historic canal quarter (Venezia Nuova) and the maritime fortifications Fortezza Vecchia and Fortezza Nuova are inside the urban fabric. The municipality contains a major commercial port, a ferry terminal with services to Sardinia and Corsica, shipyards and naval facilities. Offshore features include the Secche della Meloria shoal and the Torre della Meloria. Coastal localities and bathing spots in the municipal area and immediate hinterland include Antignano, Calafuria and Quercianella, with a mix of rocky and sandy shoreline. The hill of Montenero with its Marian sanctuary is on the nearby hinterland. Local economy and culture include fishing, seafood cuisine (cacciucco) and maritime industries. Much of the municipality is built-up and industrial along the port and transport corridor.
