The cluster is inside the built-up area of the city of Modena, the provincial capital in the Emilia-Romagna section of the Po plain. The landscape within about 15 km is the flat Pianura Padana (Po Valley) with intensive agriculture, orchards, vineyards and food-processing and light-industrial zones. The Secchia (to the west) and the Panaro (to the south-east) are the nearest rivers. Nonantola, with its medieval abbey, lies roughly 8–10 km north-west of central Modena. Inside the city the Duomo (Cathedral), Torre Civica and Piazza Grande form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Modena contains the Museo Enzo Ferrari and the museum dedicated to Luciano Pavarotti, and hosts the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, a regional hospital and a mainline railway station. The surrounding province is a centre for traditional balsamic vinegar (Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena), Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and Lambrusco wine production, and the high-performance automotive sector in nearby towns (Maranello and Modena workshops). The A1 motorway and the national rail corridor serve Modena; the nearest major airport is Bologna Guglielmo Marconi.
