The area around
Location score 88/100The town sits on the southern edge of the Hyblaean (Monti Iblei) plateau; terrain within about 15 km is low hills and coastal plain. The Ionian Sea coast is in the local area and includes beaches and littoral sites such as Lido di Noto and the Vendicari Nature Reserve (Riserva Naturale Orientata Oasi Faunistica di Vendicari). The Vendicari reserve is a protected coastal wetland with beaches, salt pans, migratory bird habitats and the remains of a historical tuna fishery (Tonnara di Vendicari). The Eloro archaeological area and other Greek–Roman remains lie on the nearby coast. The ruins of the pre‑1693 town of Noto (Noto Antica) are on a nearby hill. Noto is one of the towns included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing 'Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto'. Agriculture around the town includes vineyards (Nero d'Avola), olive groves, almonds and citrus. Nearest towns within 15 km include Avola to the north, a coastal town with beaches and a railway station; several smaller coastal settlements lie along the adjacent shore. There are no ski lifts in the area; the local uplands are the Iblei heights rather than alpine mountains.
