The cluster lies on the Tuscan Maremma coast with the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills) rising inland to the east. The Tyrrhenian coast is about 6 km away at the Gulf of Follonica; the municipality includes a small marina at Marina di Scarlino and the shoreline within 15 km includes the Pineta di Follonica and the sandy beaches of the Gulf of Follonica. No regional or national park is inside 15 km (Parco Naturale della Maremma is further to the south). There are no ski lifts within 15 km; the nearest ski area is on Monte Amiata, significantly farther by car. The nearest town of size is Follonica (around 10 km) with a railway station, shops and coastal tourist services; the provincial capital Grosseto is about 35–40 km to the south with wider services and regional rail connections. The area is part of the Maremma and has a local history of metalliferous mining; local economic activities include agriculture (olive oil, wine), coastal tourism and marina-related services.
