The archipelago is volcanic in origin and includes active volcanic islands; nearby Vulcano has fumaroles and thermal mud baths. The Aeolian Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their volcanic features. Lipari has a harbour with regular ferry and hydrofoil links to Sicily (Milazzo and Messina) and to the other Aeolian islands. The town of Lipari includes an archaeological museum and a medieval castle/fortified acropolis. The local landscape within reach is island coastline with rocky cliffs, beaches, coves and extensive pumice deposits from past eruptions. The area is known for boat-based tourism, fishing, hiking on volcanic trails and volcanic geology.
