The Mediterranean coast is nearby, with the beaches and low shoreline around Marina di Modica, Maganuco and Pozzallo within about 15 km. Modica itself is a substantial town with extensive Baroque fabric rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, and it is part of the UNESCO Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. The countryside around it is known for dry-stone walls, carob and olive groves, and chocolate made to a traditional local method.
