The nearest ski lifts are at Campo Imperatore, reached by mountain road in roughly 35–45 minutes, with other lifts at Campo Felice farther west. L’Aquila is the main town of inland Abruzzo and has administrative services, a university, major churches and a substantial historic centre under long post-earthquake reconstruction. The area is known for the Gran Sasso, for saffron from the Navelli side of the wider basin, and for mountain pastoral landscapes in the surrounding highlands.
