Montepulciano sits on the ridge landscape of the Val di Chiana and close to the Val d’Orcia, with cultivated hills, cypress lines and scattered farmhouses within the surrounding countryside. The Val d’Orcia UNESCO World Heritage landscape begins just to the west around Pienza and San Quirico d’Orcia. Lake Montepulciano lies just east of town, with reed beds and the Riserva Naturale Lago di Montepulciano. The nearest larger centres are Chiusi and Chianciano Terme, while Siena is the main city in the wider area. Montepulciano itself is a substantial historic hill town with Renaissance palaces and is known for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Pienza, within the same local hill country, is UNESCO-listed for its historic centre.
