The immediate landscape is coastal: rocky and pebble shores, indented bays and karst hills with Mediterranean maquis. Lake Vrana (Vransko jezero), a large freshwater lake on Cres and a protected bird habitat and drinking-water reservoir, lies on the island within about 15 km. The area is maritime: the Kvarner Gulf and the Cres–Lošinj island group frame daily life and local transport. Ferry links connect Cres with the Istrian mainland (Porozina–Brestova) and with Krk (Merag–Valbiska) from points on the island. The nearest local towns are the town of Cres (harbour, medieval walls, basic shops and services) and Osor (navigation channel between Cres and Lošinj, archaeological remains). The islands have active summer boating and yachting traffic and seasonal tourism; year-round services are limited. Griffon vultures have been reintroduced and nest on Cres. There are no ski lifts or named mountain ranges in the 15 km area; terrain is low karst hills rather than alpine relief.
