The Dolomites are the immediate setting, with the Cadore basin under the Tre Cime di Lavaredo group to the north-east and the Marmarole to the south-west. Lake Santa Caterina lies in the town area. Much of the surrounding mountain landscape falls within the Dolomiti Bellunesi and Dolomiti d’Ampezzo protected systems, and the wider Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ski lifts are at Monte Agudo above Auronzo, with the Tre Cime ski area at Misurina and Cortina d’Ampezzo reached by mountain road. Auronzo has the basic services of a small mountain town, while Cortina is the nearest larger centre with a wider tourist economy and amenities. The area is known for access to the Tre Cime, alpine lakes such as Misurina, and summer and winter mountain tourism.
