The cluster is in the upper Aterno valley with the Monti della Laga to the north and west and the Gran Sasso massif within about 15 km to the east and south-east. The Aterno river runs through this area. Part of the surrounding territory falls within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The nearest ski area is Campo Imperatore on the Gran Sasso, roughly an hour away by road, so it does not define the immediate setting. L'Aquila is the nearest city of size, with full services, a university and a substantial historic centre. This part of inland Abruzzo is known for mountain pasture, woodland and small stone villages in the seismic Apennine interior.
