The cluster sits on the low-lying Metapontino coastal plain on Italy’s Ionian coast with sandy beaches and summer lidos on the shoreline. The Bosco Pantano di Policoro, a coastal swamp-forest and regional nature reserve, lies adjacent to the town and protects wetland and wooded habitats. The mouth of the Sinni river and associated wetlands are within the local area. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Siritide is in Policoro and finds from the ancient Greek city of Herakleia (Heraclea) are displayed in the town; the Parco Archeologico di Herakleia is nearby. Land use around the town is largely agricultural (olive groves, cereals and other crops) on a flat plain with scattered small settlements. The town is served by the Jonica railway line along the Ionian coast and by a network of regional roads connecting other coastal towns such as Scanzano Jonico.
